Celebrating Small Business Success: Rhonda Base and Family Hair Flair

For over three decades, Family Hair Flair has been a staple in the communities of Tescott and Lincoln, Kansas. Owned by Rhonda Base, this thriving salon business has been built on dedication, education, and a genuine love for people. We had the opportunity to sit down with Rhonda and learn more about her journey as a small business owner, the growth of Family Hair Flair, and the invaluable role the Bank of Tescott has played in her success.
From a Dream to a Reality
Rhonda opened Family Hair Flair in 1988, driven by a need for a closer commute to school events and to better serve customers who had been traveling to Minneapolis for hair services. Over the years, the business flourished, leading her to expand with a second location in Lincoln in 2015.
"When we outgrew the original shop, we decided to build a new location in Tescott. A few years later, we found ourselves needing even more space, which led to opening our second salon in Lincoln," Rhonda shared.
The Key to Longevity and Success
What has kept Family Hair Flair thriving for so many years? According to Rhonda, it boils down to education, passion, and an outgoing personality.
"Education, always—and my mouth! I love people, and they let me give them static all day and then pay me for it."
This ability to connect with customers and create a welcoming, fun atmosphere has helped Family Hair Flair maintain a loyal clientele. The salon offers a variety of services, including haircuts, hair coloring, perming, waxing, manicures, and pedicures—all within the scope of professional licensing.
Community Involvement and Small-Town Charm
Rhonda is known for her active involvement in the community, and she loves participating in local events. "Parades are my favorite. They’re free advertising, and it’s fun to explore our creative side in a different way."
When asked what she loves most about being a small-town business owner, Rhonda didn’t hesitate: "The awesome people—the kindness, the generosity. It’s an extended family that I don’t think you would get in a big city. Family, friends, and the relationships we build with both."
The Bank of Tescott: A Trusted Partner
Rhonda credits the Bank of Tescott for being a crucial partner in her business journey.
"The Bank of Tescott gave me my first business loan, my second, and even my third. I am very fortunate to have had their trust throughout the years."
The support from a local bank that believes in small businesses has allowed Family Hair Flair to grow and continue serving the communities of Tescott and Lincoln.
Advice for Aspiring Small Business Owners
For those considering starting their own business in a small town, Rhonda offers this advice:
"Be optimistically careful and believe in yourself. Be ready to work hard—nothing worthwhile is easy, but the reward can be overwhelmingly amazing."
